이 책은 1992년부터 1997년까지 유엔개발계획(UNDP)에 의해 설립된 국제백신연구소(IVI)의 짧은 창립 역사를 다룹니다. The short history of the founding of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI).

This book tells the short history of the founding of the International Vaccine Institute(IVI) by the United Nations Development Programme from 1992 to 1997. The idea of IVI was from a failed vaccine project of CJ, which used to be a part of Samsung. They produced affordable vaccines for children to provide to developing countries and it would help public health problems they were having. Yet, having a good intention and biotechnology was not enough. The leader of the project, Dr. Seung-il Shin, thought this needed to be done with an international institute. He pitched his idea to the UN and it was approved quickly. Being a UN programme didn’t solve all problems; the politics were in the way until the last minute. This book tells the drive and struggles of the people who made it possible to improve children’s health issues, as well as the support of scientists from all over the world regardless of politics.

전 유엔개발계획(UNDP) 수석 보건 고문 및 IVI 프로젝트 단장. 브랜다이스 대학교에서 학사 및 석사 학위를 받았으며, 네덜란드 라이덴 대학교에서 인간 유전학을 공부했습니다. 스위스 바젤 면역학 연구소의 창립 멤버 중 한 명이며, 뉴욕 앨버트 아인슈타인 의과대학에서 14년간 유전학 교수로 재직하며 체세포 유전학 및 종양 생물학을 연구했습니다. 뉴저지에 기반을 둔 바이오 벤처 유진텍 인터내셔널(Eugene Tech International)의 공동 창립자이자 CEO로서, 뉴욕혈액센터와 공동으로 저가형 B형 간염 백신을 개발 및 상용화하고 개발도상국에 백신을 보급하는 국제 캠페인에서 주도적인 역할을 했습니다. 1992년 UNDP의 초청으로 개발도상국 어린이들을 위한 저렴한 백신 보급 운동인 '어린이 백신 이니셔티브(CVI)' 하에 백신 과학 국제 센터(IVI) 설립 계획을 개발하고 실행했으며, 이는 1997년 IVI의 설립으로 이어졌습니다.

Shin received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brandeis University, and trained in human genetics at the University of Leiden. He was one of the founding members of the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland. He then served as a Professor of Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York for 14 years, where his research was in somatic cell genetics and tumor biology. He was a co-founder and CEO of Eugene Tech International, a biotech venture based in New Jersey. He led the development and commercialization of a low-cost hepatitis B vaccine in a joint effort with the New York Blood Center, and played a leading role in an international campaign to bring the new vaccine to the developing world. The United Nations Development Programme in 1992 invited Shin to develop and implement a plan for an international center of vaccine sciences focused on the needs of developing countries under the aegis of the Children’s Vaccine Initiative, a global movement to expand the availability of affordable vaccines for the world’s children. The UNDP-initiative eventually led to the birth of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in 1997. In this memoir, Shin recounts how, despite some initial difficulties, international partners came together to create IVI and to find a home for it in Seoul, Korea.
